Day 1 of BYOT

Dr. Tim Clark is the Coordinator of Instructional Technology for Forsyth County Schools in Georgia. He has a blog at http://byotnetwork.com/.  I recently found a post on his blog providing strategies for the first week of school in a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) classroom.  Here is day 1:  http://byotnetwork.com/2012/07/30/day-1-of-byot/.  Feel free to search his blog for other ideas.

Please share your plans for Day 1 of our BYOT Pilot here.

  1. My class will be bringing devices that have QR Code Reader apps installed. I have created a QR Code Scavenger Hunt that will get the students up and moving around the building. Each QR Code has a question that applies to the novel we are reading in class. The students will work in groups and will record their answers to the questions on a response sheet.

  2. The students had a blast today using the QR Codes! They left asking when they could do it again. As I reflect on the day, I realize more than ever that it takes a lot of patience on my part and that things won't go perfectly, but that's okay. It's important for the students to learn that we will "go with the flow". My attitude and example set the tone. I am already brainstorming new ideas and can't wait to move forward with BYOT!

  3. We had our first class using BYOT on 10/2. Students were really excited about it. Once directions, and tasks were given, students flew solo! They explored the websites suggested for our first project, and worked faster. After our first day, I can say that I need to adjust the number of tasks done in a class period. Though students advanced in our project, not all tasks planned could be done in class. Still, it was great for students and me!
